The ENTFM (Entomopixel Forces Measure) is a low-cost, miniature sensor designed to directly measure the bite force of small animals and objects. Understanding bite force helps researchers study the anatomy, physiology, and ecology of various species.
The device uses a parallel-plate strain gauge assembly in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. When an organism bites, the plates bend and generate an electrical signal proportional to the force in Newtons, which is then amplified and recorded digitally. Its minimally invasive design prevents artifacts and avoids interrupting the natural biting process.
With interchangeable parts, the ENTFM adapts to mouthparts separated by less than 2 mm. It has been successfully tested on spiders (suborder Araneomorpha), scorpion pedipalps, Superworms (Zophobas morio), and snakes (Crotalus durissus). Users can swap load cells to measure wide dynamic ranges of 10 N, 1 N, and < 0.1 N.
